Folk Tech is Back!

Due to being somewhat incapacitated for a bit (read the whole awful story here) we've had a Folk Tech break but I am super excited to be returning with an awesome new session on Community Networks featuring Luandro Vieria and Bruno Caldas Vianna, both fresh off talks at this year's MozFest!

Folk Tech is a solidarity-based movement among designers, developers, and people in communities who want digital technology that supports their daily life and interdependence without the extraction, exploitation, or surveillance found in most proprietary technology today.

Community Networks are one of the key approaches of community-owned technology, where people on the ground in a local context can make decisions about what their community needs and what kind of governance makes sense.

Luandro has worked with traditional and indigenous communities in Brasil, Peru, and all around the world to support and develop community networks. He will share important insights about establishing and co-designing networks as well as some of the challenges in both networking itself and the shifts that result from greater access to the online world.

Bruno's current work centres on the aesthetics of Artificial Intelligence at Barcelona, but here we'll draw upon his work at Nuvem laboratory for art and technology in the countryside of Brasil, alongside his more recent thinking about local AI in a community context.

Of course, we'll also have time to get connected, hear about MozFest and other recent happenings, and share our work.

Also, you might be interested in the upcoming Community Networks Conference on November 20 in Seattle. If we make it there in person, we'll do a Folk Tech gathering live!
